We had the wonderful fortune to bird Wetzel State Recreation Area again yesterday with another really great birder! (Blog later…) What is it about Wetzel that draws great birders - maybe birds? Also dragonflies (more “flappy things” I like to shoot) and butterflies and aquatic critters. It is a really different and special place in Macomb County! Anyway, as we were leaving, we saw a map posted on the kiosk at the main parking lot that looked familiar in its presentation - even from a distance. Yes, closer examination revealed a Rob Golda (Hiking Michigan) original! It is by far the best map of the area and I want to pass it along here. The map makes it easy to tell others where a certain bird was found! For example, I have not yet gotten the Clay-colored Sparrow there, but I know where it lives! http://www.hikingmichigan.com/PDFinfo/WetzelStatePark.pdf The main page for Hiking Michigan is: http://www.hikingmichigan.com/index.html Friends of Wetzel URL (with link to overall location): http://www.fowsra.org/ On this trip, I got my first Eastern Towhee (Cool! Now I have finally heard the real drink-your-tea song), Field Sparrow, Marsh Wren, and across the road, our first Pheasant. Previously I got the Bobolink, Savannah Sparrows and Sedge Wren as lifers. I have blogs up on two of the previous trips. http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/wetzel-sra-macomb-county-michigan-2010.html http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/wetzel-sra-macomb-county-michigan.html I mostly want to pass along the just-now-uploaded map (thanks Rob, quick response! Excellent map!), and to let y’all know what a great place this is. I also want to again thank Chris, Ed, and Darrin (our mentors!) who really made it special for Judy and me on our outings with you, and gave us new “eyes and ears” with which to appreciate our feathered friends! Wow! You guys really make the big difference in our experiences! Thank you! PS, When you go, be sure you check for ticks, especially if you are “bush whacking” - but don’t let this stop you from enjoying a great place! "Dr.
Bob" Setzer |
